Ben Kuppe, Head of Business Intelligence at Scope Australia, has over 20 years of experience in data and analytics. Having originally studied sports management, he transitioned into data analytics, where he found his passion. His career spans both profit and not-for-profit sectors, with experience in consulting and in-house roles, giving him a wellrounded perspective on data-driven decision-making.
At Scope Australia, a leading disability provider, Ben strengthens data analytics capabilities by building a solid foundation, recruiting top talent, fostering a thriving culture and ensuring the organization derives real value from its data to drive strategic decisions.
In an interview with APAC CIO Outlook, Kuppe discusses the evolving business intelligence (BI) landscape, key challenges in talent acquisition and technology adoption and how AI is shaping the future of BI.
What Are The Major Challenges And Pain Points Currently Shaping The BI Landscape?
I see two key challenges in the BI space. First, ensuring the right people are in the right roles. At the end of the day, success depends on having skilled individuals who can effectively deliver on the work. Attracting top-tier talent remains a significant challenge for most organizations.
Second is the constant evolution of technology and data platforms. While new technologies continue to emerge, upgrading isn’t always straightforward. Many organizations operate with existing legacy data warehouses and BI applications, making transitions complex.
Success In Bi Starts With Strong Relationships With Executives And Senior Leaders To Gain Buyin And Support. A Clear Strategy And Direction Are Essential, Regardless Of The Industry
It’s never as simple as implementing the latest solution—there’s always a need to balance current systems with future requirements to ensure they remain fit for purpose in the short to medium term.
Given These Challenges, Have You Observed Any Market Trends Or Developments That Aim To Address Or Overcome Them?
Regarding the second challenge, I can only speak from my experience in my last two roles. In my previous role at Monash Health, we had an old on-premise data warehouse that was quite large, contained a significant amount of data, and delivered real value. Migrating it to a new cloud environment would have been a significant challenge.
In my current role, however, I have had the advantage of working with a greenfield approach. One of our key strategic initiatives has been implementing a new cloud-based data platform within Microsoft’s fabric environment. We decided early on that rather than attempting to migrate or upgrade the previous system, it would be more effective to build one from the ground up.
As for talent acquisition, I have always found that working with trusted recruitment agencies yields better results. The key is to create well-defined and engaging roles while offering fair market rates. It’s not about overpaying but ensuring compensation is competitive. When these factors are in place, attracting top talent becomes much easier, especially since the work we do is inherently interesting and the roles tend to be appealing.
Where Is The BI Space Headed In The Next 18 To 24 Months? With AI And Generative AI Gaining Traction, How Do You See These Technologies Shaping The Future Of BI?
AI is undoubtedly shaping the future of BI. Though many non-technical users often blur the lines between BI and AI, assuming they are the same, they serve distinct functions. There is a growing expectation for BI and data analytics teams to take the lead in AI implementation within organizations, even if it means stepping outside their traditional roles.
From a development and productivity standpoint, AI has the potential to significantly accelerate workflows. Tools like ChatGPT, Copilot and similar AI-driven solutions can enhance coding, automate functions and help standardize development processes. Rather than existing as standalone solutions, AI capabilities will become embedded directly into BI tools, streamlining operations and making AI integration a seamless part of the BI ecosystem. These shifts are already taking place and will continue to evolve.
What Advice Would You Give To Peers And Colleagues On Creating A Seamless Process Within Their Organizations?
Success in BI starts with strong relationships with executives and senior leaders to gain buy-in and support. A clear strategy and direction are essential, regardless of the industry.
Key foundations include recruiting the right talent, establishing an effective team structure, building a highquality cloud-based data platform and investing in data governance. Once these fundamentals are in place, it's crucial to empower managers and team leads, giving them the autonomy and support to excel in their roles.
At a senior level, the focus should be on strategic oversight, guidance, and ensuring that the organization stays on course. Ultimately, success comes from setting the right foundation, assembling the right team, and providing the leadership needed to drive results.
